City Fellowships in Finance - A Unique Professional Opportunity for INROADS Alumni
May 4, 2007

Are you looking for an opportunity to transform your career in business, finance or economics? The City Fellowships can offer you a unique opportunity the world's top, investment bank, Goldman Sachs, in the world's most international finance service center, London.
Initially, the Fellowship is a one year performance-based contract. If you are an outstanding performer, your prospects of permanent employment with Goldman are excellent. Salary and benefits are very competitive and City Fellows are eligible to participate in Goldman's bonus pool.

Three INROADS Alumni City Fellows share their experiences.

Carolina Marte, New York City
In March, I arrived in London to begin my City Fellowship in the Planning and Analysis Department in Controllers, after leaving my previous job in the insurance industry. Upon the initiation of my fellowship, I had limited knowledge of investment banking, and therefore, since my arrival, it has been a never ending learning experience. Not only does Goldman provides the necessary tools to learn about the business, but the members in my team are keen to help me understand the different products and financial structures of the firm. In addition, as one's knowledge increases the more responsibilities one is given and this to me is the most admirable aspect of working in this firm, as it is never an ending learning experience.

Tia Martin, Jacksonville
I first learned about the city fellowship program in an e-mail from INROADS! It’s one of those things you read and think to yourself: ‘this seems like an unreal opportunity.’ I am grateful that I decided to apply despite that initial reaction. The City Fellowship program has been everything I’d imagined and more! Professionally, I am working for Goldman Sachs, a premier investment banking firm, and in London, one of the major financial cities in the world! In terms of my career, it doesn’t get any better than that combination. And it is exciting living and working in Europe! Aside from that, I’m working for an awesome firm.

My position with the Projects Team included responsibility for managing the client’s assets, specifically with the Client Money Platform, a tool the used for segregation of client assets. My responsibilities have proven to be both challenging and fun. My colleagues are incredibly helpful, and I continue learning every day. I believe potential employers value international experience, and exposure to different cultures. My motto has always been: “An individual with limited exposure has limited experience, thus restricting their outlook on life and point of view in many situations.” One of my key reasons for applying for the City Fellowship was to expand my horizons. My perspective on life is completely different as a result of living in London. It’s interesting to observe cultures and I also take every opportunity to travel throughout Europe (it’s much cheaper to go to Paris from London vs from Atlanta). I’ve met people from all over the world who share different perspectives and tremendously enrich my life.

Aaron Merriweather, St. Louis
In April 2005, I began my tenure as a City Fellow at Goldman Sachs in London. In my position, I have the wonderful opportunity to interface with colleagues in both European and North American offices. Goldman Sachs immediately provided me with a high degree of responsibility, that I willingly accepted.

I was inspired to apply for the City Fellowship Program because of the fantastic experience that a friend of mine had as a fellow. It is a perfect opportunity to experience the professional and social culture in Britain. I have a tremendously enjoyable time exploring London and interacting with my colleagues. I believe that a deep appreciation for the global economy that we live and work in is essential to my future success and the City Fellowship Program has given me the opportunity to experience international financial services first-hand. I would encourage anyone who is serious about becoming a successful financial services professional to apply to the City Fellowship Program. I am sure that my tenure as a City Fellow will provide me with a lifetime of rewards.
